South County Hospital
Intern
September-December 2017
For my final semester at the University of Rhode Island I decided to further my education by dedicating my time to an internship at South County Hospital, located in South Kingston, RI. This internship had me involved in many different tasks that include: Cancer Center, Quality and Safety, Patient Experience, Wellness Beyond, and Patient Escort. With each task I was given I learned a different department in the hospital, what roles staff members play in to make the hospital run efficiently, and proper verbal and non verbal communication that I used on a daily basis.
This internship has given me insight into specific task that I wish to look for in a career and the future career path I wish to embark on.Furthermore, I gained extensive knowledge from communication skills to medical terminology to feeling empowered to voice my opinion in situations to building friendships and networking throughout the hospital.

This project working with the Cancer Center involved starting a new volunteer opportunity of bringing around a comfort basket for patients that were receiving infusions that included healthy snacks, entertainment, healthy recipes patients could make at home, and more.
Working with Patient Experience involves going to each floor of the hospital (3 levels) and going into rooms that are willing to take a quick survey involving the quality of their stay. While asking questions many times this will lead to conversations with the patients that involve listening and communication skills, patience, and sometimes responding to complaints in a professional manner.
Working in the Department of Performance Improvement (Quality) involves many different tasks from working with Medical Records to inputting data that will help with a larger project.
Furthermore, another task that the department assigned me with was giving stroke patients a call and asking them questions from a survey with the service they were given at the hospital.

Working throughout the hospital I have come to realize the importance behind confidential information to keep patients personal information safe. Throughout the many hours I dedicated to this internship I came across a few situations that confidential information came into play. Additionally, how I came to understand the difference between confidential information and being able to voice for the patient and their safety.
